The Mustang JV team place runner-up Saturday afternoon at the Boone Central Tournament in Newman Grove.
They dropped a 25-11, 25-15 match to Battle Creek before rebounding to beat the host 25-21, 17-25, 15-4. "All players stepped up today, pushed through some injuries and finished strong earning second place," coach Lorry Morfeld said. "I'm so proud of these girls!" The Stanton volleyball team finished sixth Saturday at the Columbus Scotus Tournament.
The Mustangs opened action with a 25-14, 25-8 loss to Lakeview before rebounding for a 25-15, 25-15 win over Twin River. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Mustangs flipped the script Friday night and turned a tight game into a dominating 46-16 win at home.
Down 16-14 to visiting Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Mustang senior Trey Elbert nabbed a key interception and changed the momentum of the game. Elbert's pick set up the Mustangs deep in their own territory, and Gage Tighe used the gift for a 76-yard touchdown sprint to take the lead and stun the Bears. For more photos, click here. "I feel amazing about the win," Elbert said. "Coach said it was the tale of two halves. The first half we had to adjust to a couple of things on defense. The second half we stuck to our core defense that we prepared for all week, and we stopped them while they couldn't run anything on us." Stanton picked up its first win of the season Thursday as the Mustangs hosted a home triangular against Madison and Clarkson-Leigh.
The Mustang varsity team opened with a 2-0 win over Madison, defeating the Dragons 25-9, 25-16. Sylvia Cunningham put down seven kills while Olivia Cunningham hammed another six kills. Bridgett Jensen put up eight set assists while Haylea Nelson added another seven set assists. Against Clarkson-Leigh, the Mustangs fell 25-15, 25-22. Sylvia Cunningham and Ellie Locke combined for 11 kills while Jensen and Nelson combined for 16 set assists. For more photos, click here. In JV action, the Mustangs picked up a pair of wins. Against Madison, Stanton won 25-10, 25 before downing Clarkson-Leigh 25-22, 24-26, 15-13. "I was so proud of them. It was a blast to watch!" JV coach Lorry Morfeld said. With temperatures hovering around 80 degrees and a 9-mph breeze out of the northwest, it was a near perfect day for the Stanton Invitational at Elkhorn Acres Golf Course.
The Mustangs finished fourth as a team with junior Shelby Jenkinson earning eighth place with a 112 after nearly identical rounds. Zoe Wurdinger was also consistent, carding a 69 on the front nine and 67 on the back. Aryana Wurdinger dropped 22 strokes on her back nine to finish with a 162. Brooke Diekemper shot a 92 to win the tournament and lead West Point-Beemer to a five-stroke win over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. Linsey Hoehne earned a medal in the girls race and Abraham Larson and Kolter Van Pelt brought home hardware in the boys race. In Stanton's first football game of the season, the Mustangs took the road and jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 35-0 at the half. The Mustangs have a team of five this year with juniors Rachel Thomas and Shelby Jenkinson returning. along with and new comers junior Zoe Wurdinger, sophomore Aryana Wurdinger and freshman Terra Woods.
More than 50 golfers competed with 20 medals handed out. Shelby Jenkinson placed 21st with a score of 113 on 18 holes, improving her game from last year's Wayne invite by 12 strokes Aryana Wurdinger shot a 165, Zoe Wurdinger carded a 168 and Terra Woods (picked up at 10) with a 165. The Mustang volleyball team opened up the fall season on the road Thursday night with both the varsity and junior varsity squads taking the court in the Battle Creek Triangular.
Both Mustang teams went 0-2, falling to West Point-Beemer before dropping a match to host Battle Creek. "It was so nice for the team to be back on the court tonight, playing other teams, in uniform, in front of spectators, and getting that first games under our belts," said junior varsity coach Lorry Morfeld said.
