This local publisher saved a nearby newspaper from closing

Carrie Pitzer is owner and publisher of Pitzer Digital based in Neligh, Nebraska. Going against the grain, she took on a third weekly newspaper during the pandemic rather than see it close. “The Stanton Register is the only legal newspaper in the entire Stanton County, so if that newspaper would have closed, there would be no newspaper in Stanton County,” she said. “Where would those legal notices go, you know? How would the subscribers receive information on meeting notices, meeting minutes, budgets bonds, things like that? That was all going to go away.”

Small-town Nebraska newspaper, hammered by loss of revenue, finds new life with new owners

Over 140 years, the Stanton Register has detailed the history of its northeast Nebraska circulation area, from the advent of electricity in 1903 to the violent twin tornadoes that roared past in 2014 and the devastating flood of 2019.  
But late last month, with advertising revenue drying up as businesses closed because of COVID-19, the owners of the 600-circulation weekly newspaper decided to call it quits. “All of advertising basically disappeared, or a large portion of it,” said editor and publisher Dani Hadcock, who had owned Stanton County’s only newspaper since 2016. “We had subscribers telling us, ‘I just can’t afford to renew my subscription because I’m out of a job.’ ”

Pitzer Digital Acquires Stanton Register Newspaper

The Stanton Register is under new ownership as of May 7, continuing its more than 140 years of publication. While it had been announced that the newspaper would be closing, a company with both local ties and a newspaper background will keep the newspaper running and provide local news content, public notices and advertisements for Stanton County.
