NCelebration of life service for Robert G. "Bud" Dahlkoetter, 93, of Norfolk will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2020 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk. Inurnment will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16 at the Stonacek Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #16, V.F.W. #1644, and the United States Army Honors Guard. Bud died Thursday, March 19, 2020 at The Monarch Hospice and Care facility in Lincoln. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Robert "Bud" was born on May 18, 1926 in Pilger, Nebraska to William and Margaret (Rathman) Dahlkoetter. He was confirmed at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Stanton. He attended grade school at a rural district country school in Stanton County to the 8th grade. After Bud’s education, he lived on the family farm and helped his family. He joined the United States Army on January 19, 1946. Bud was honorably discharged on April 13, 1947 and he moved back to the family farm and continued farming with his family. Bud married Lillian Agnes Prachyl on June 7, 1949 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Stanton. After marriage, Bud and Lillian lived on a farm in Stanton County from 1949-1953. They then moved to a farm South of McLean from 1953-1959. They moved back to Stanton County and farmed from 1959 until retirement. After retirement, Bud still enjoyed being on the farm. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling in their motor home for 3 years, traveling to almost 50 states. Bud loved spending time and being with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Norfolk. Survivors include his son Dean (Kris) Dahlkoetter of Norfolk, daughter Karen (Tim) Else of Belvidere, NE., 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his spouse Lillian died on January 29, 2017, parents William and Margaret, siblings Wilma Palmer, Ellen Dahlkoetter, Alvin Dahlkoetter, Ralph Dahlkoetter, Donald Dahlkoetter, and JoAnn Hrabak. Melvon Arnold August Vollbrecht, age 100 of Stanton, died Tuesday June 23, 2020 at Stanton Health Center in Stanton, Nebraska. He was born August 6, 1919 in rural Stanton County to Herman and Retta (Patzel) Vollbrecht. Melvon was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Melvon attended Stanton County District #55 and District #24. After 8th grade, he helped his father on the farm and later purchased it. He spent the rest of his life as a farmer until he moved into Stanton. He would drive his car out to the farm every day to check on his horses, pastures and the crops. He enjoyed riding his 4 wheeler and his horses well into his 90’s. He was an ardent conservationist. He was among the first farmers to put in terraces and dams on ravines to stop erosion. He seeded native grass and planted shelterbelts. Native animals and birds soon found food and shelter. One of his proudest moments was when he had all the pastures returned to native grass. He went to work at the Stanton County Soil Conservation during the 1957 drought. He was a perfect fit with Russell Clocker and Sherman Throckmorton. On February 2, 1942 he married Viola Long. They later divorced. He married Elsie Daum on April 20, 1964. They were later divorced. Viola and Elsie preceded him in death. Melvon enjoyed farming, playing third base on the Union Creek team and most of all… dancing. He and Viola were avid dancers and were able to know Lawrence Welk and other famous band leaders. He and Elsie faithfully attended dances all over northeast Nebraska. Where there was a dance, there was Melvon and Elsie dancing away. Survivors include Melvon’s six children Rose Ann and Terry Daniel of Meridian, ID; Arnold “Butch” and Donna Vollbrecht of Stanton; Nancy and Richard Hunt of Caldwell, ID; JoAnn Buckendahl of Kenesaw, NE; Don and Cindy Vollbrecht of Norfolk; and Ron Vollbrecht of Stanton. Also surviving are Melvon’s four step-grandchildren Connie Sue and Leon Schultz; Dennis and LaJean Daum; Chris and Andy Noelle and Cindy Jansen. His grandchildren; Nick, Cory and Teri Daniel; Heidi Hunt, Robin Ellingson, Richard Hunt and Jessica Durham; Todd and Tony Vollbrecht; Joe, Jeff, and Mindy Buckendahl and Tara Schmidt; Eric Schroeder and Jordan Schroeder; and number great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren. Preceding Melvon in death include his parents Herman and Retta (Patzel) Vollbrecht and his 11 siblings Ervin, Elsie, LaVerna, Edna, Ruth, Raymond, Mirle, Herman August, Loretta, Calvin and Harley; his two wives and his great grandchild Kiefer Daniel. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Dorothy was born on October 6th, 1933 on a farm south of Pilger, Nebraska to Louis W. and Dorothy E. (Blank) Belz. Her family moved to Stanton, Nebraska when she was 10 and she attended Stanton Public Schools. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stanton and became a lifelong member of the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1951, and attended Wayne State College. She was an active member of Tau Beta Sigma, Honorary Band Fraternity, and a member of Beta Theta Chapter of the Kappa Pi Art Fraternity. She finished in 3 ½ years from Wayne State College with graduation in spring of 1955. Upon graduation she spent her career teaching in Columbus, Norfolk, Hastings, Wolbach, Palmer, Scribner, and David City. Throughout her career she taught Art, Social Studies, Science, and was a Media Specialist. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Samuel Byers in 1964 and spent many years following the Nebraska Cornhuskers to many of the games. She was an avid reader and spent time with her garden. Survivors include stepsons Tim (Janet) Byers, Bill (Brenda) Byers, 3 step grandchildren, and 6 step great grandchildren, sister-in-law Barbara Belz, brother Larry (LoAnn) Belz, sisters Laurel Robins, Kathy Curran, and 17 nieces and nephews. Sandra passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, on May 20, 2020. Sandy was born on August 7, 1945, in Scribner, NE, the daughter of Herbert and Edna (Pittack) Kurz. She attended rural school before she graduated from Scribner High School. After graduation, Sandra was employed at the West Point Hospital before working at Faith Regional Health Services. On November 30, 1969, Sandra married Gary C. Horst at Trinity Lutheran Church, of rural Scribner. The couple was blessed with three children. They farmed south of Wisner for several years before moving to a farm south of Pilger. Gary and Sandy continued to farm for over 20 years. Sandy was very active in her church. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible Study and she was the Funeral Committee Chairwoman. She was a volunteer caretaker for several elderly friends. Sandy enjoyed gardening, canning and caring for her flowers. They were active in their neighborhood card club. Sandra is survived by her spouse of 50 years; their children—son, Ryan Horst, of Wisner, daughter, Karen (Ivan) Petersen, of Norfolk, their children Marshall, Mason and Kendra, daughter, Debra (Eric) Wegener, of Bassett, and their children, Aleksus, Clayton and Landen; one brother, Gene (Eunice) Kurz, of Oakland, and one sister, Joan Mayberry, of Brush, CO. Cody Joseph Stone, age 22 of Norfolk, died Friday May 15, 2020 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. He was born June 5, 1997 at Fargo, North Dakota the son of Julie Stone and F. Lee Joyner. He was baptize at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk. A member of Christ the Servant where he was confirmed. He was a 2015 graduate of Norfolk Public Schools. He worked while attending high school at Dairy Queen and Applebee’s in Norfolk.
He was employed at 3D Metal Works in Norfolk as a welder in repair, maintenance and building for Nucor Steel operations. His hobbies include working on his car, being with his kids and friends and driving around with his fiancé, Breanna, listening to music. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Julie and Scott Greve of Stanton; fiancé Breanna McNutt of Norfolk; son Bayne Stone of Norfolk; Stepson Easton Click of Norfolk; maternal grandparents Dona and Ed Steffen of Yankton, SD; Michael and Donna Stone of Sebeka, MN; step-grandparents Art and Mae Greve of Wayne; step-brother Zach Greve of Kona, HI; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Peggy was born in Stanton Nebraska, November 22nd 1936 to Edwin Marshall and Maude Matheson Marshall. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Donna Harris (Jerry) and Margret Bauer (Lavern), nephew Barry Bauer and niece Jeri Lynn Harris. Peggy is survived by her nephew Terry Bauer, nieces Sue Harris Carter (Duane), Donna Palmer (William), Judith Harrell, and nephew Edwin J Harris. She Traveled to Nebraska three times a year to visit family and friends and cheered a loyal fan! Her ashes will be interred in the family plot in Stanton.
Doctor Marshall received her BA from Doane College, Crete Nebraska. She received her MA from the University of Michigan and PhD in English from Indiana University. In 1975 she began a 25 year tenure teaching English in New York. Within a few short years she distinguished herself as a beloved teacher, valued mentor and colleague and strong advocate for teacher professionalism. She became chair of the English dept, advisor to National Honor Society and president of the teachers association, earning the respect and admiration of fellow teachers, students, school administrators and board members. Doctor Marshall also served in a leadership role on the CNY English Council, on the cabinet of Syracuse University Project Advance and as an adjunct instructor in education at LeMoyne College. Peggy loved and lived to travel. She co-chaperoned student tours to Ireland, Russia, China, India, Japan and SE Asia. Since retirement she has joined an annual theater tour to London each January. She would delight in quick trips or accompanying a friend to just about anywhere. She will be missed!
