The Stanton County Sheriff's race is officially contested. Incumbent Mike Unger filed for re-election on Thursday. His opponent James Hetzler filed on Friday.

Both men are registered as Republicans, so their race will be decided in the May primary. The winner may face a Democratic opponent, if there is a candidate, in the November general election.

Unger, a graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School, is seeking his ninth term as sheriff. He's a U.S. Army veteran and served overseas during the Cold War.

Hetzler, a graduate of Stanton Community Schools, is currently a deputy in Washington County. He previously worked for the Norfolk Police department and was in the U.S. Army for six years, including multiple tours overseas.

Look for more details on both candidates in next week's issue of the Stanton Register.
