The Mustangs were a bit short-handed for their second meet of the season, but still turned out several personal-best performances at the Battle Creek Invite on Tuesday.

Stanton Coach David Ernesti said he had “a lot of kids out” because juniors took the ACT that day, but he was able to move some of the athletes into new events and still find success.

“Sutton Pohlman ran a 10.95 in the 100 prelims, so that was a good experiment for us,” he said.

Pohlman went on to finish runner up in the event with an 11.1 in finals, and teammate Mitchell Hupp was right behind in third with an 11.2.

The sprinting duo later teamed up with Jason Clausen and Brennan Wragge to win the 4x100 relay in 45.1 seconds.

Van Pelt, a junior, made his appearance at the track meet just in time to win the 1,600-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:52.4. He later joined Pohlman, Hupp and Wragge to earn a fifth-place medal in the 4x400 relay.

The Mustangs also had a pair of medalists in the throwing events as Ellie Locke hurled the discus 96-3 for fifth-place and Mason Bruggeman was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 42-8.75.

The Stanton girls finished eighth in the team standings and the boys placed sixth overall.

Coach Ernesti said several of his athletes earned personal records on the day, including Wragge, who leapt 18-7 in the long jump.

“He didn’t quite make finals, but he still did well,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of those kinds of stories today, where the kid personally did really well, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into being a medalist or in finals. But it’s nice to have a good day and have the kids competing well.”

Stanton will be back on the track this Saturday as they travel to Wisner for the Wisner-Pilger Invite.
