The Stanton golf team opened its season in dominating fashion as they won their home meet by more than 20 strokes on Tuesday afternoon.

“They came out and competed really hard,” Mustang Coach Cory Loecke said. “Anytime you come out in the first meet of the season and win it by 21 strokes you gotta be pretty happy.”

Stanton shot a 178 as a team, hosting Howells-Dodge (199), Twin River (208) and Madison (239) in the quad at Elkhorn Acres.

Sophomore Owen Vogel started his high school golf career off in a big way as he carded a 41 to lead all golfers in the quad.

“This is really his first competitive golf on the high school level, and he came out and led all scorers with 41,” the coach said. “And he left some strokes on the course too, so we’re really expecting big things from him.”

Junior Parker Krusemark was a close second as he scored a 42 for the Mustangs.

“Parker had a great round going, and he finished out bogey, bogey, double bogey, and he was still the second-best scorer,” Coach Loecke said. “So if he cleans up a few short-game issues, he could be the medalist.”

Stanton’s other varsity golfers also posted strong scores as Trey Elbert shot a 47, Matt Reese 48 and Gage Tighe 50.

Although the coach said “there’s always room for improvement,” specifically in his team’s short game and limiting penalty strokes, he’s proud of his team’s performance in their first outing.

“We had all five of our varsity golfers finish in the top 10 out of 35 kids,” the coach said. “I’m very proud of them and very happy with the way they performed today.”

Team Scores: Stanton 178, Howells-Dodge 199, Twin River 208, Howells-Dodge JV 235, Madison 239, Stanton JV 283, Madison JV 296
